Thornton-le-Dale lies on the the southern edge of the North
Yorkshire Moors
National Park.
This picturesque English village has a beck running alongside the main street.
The village stocks and market cross are still in existence on the small
village green, and from the bridge a splendid view of the thatched cottage can
also be seen next to Bridgefoot house.
Thornton-le-Dale is one of the
most charming villages in England offering spectacular walks
and views, whatever the season either in the village or nearby. Although only a village, Thornton-le-Dale is well worth a visit for its
interesting buildings, pleasant walks beside the beck and many footpaths. Thornton-le-Dale lies between Pickering and Scarborough, Malton and Whitby
and makes an ideal touring base of the North York Moors and wonderful
countryside and coast.
The Roman city of York with its well preserved walls and gateways, many
museums and historical buildings, is only 28 miles away. The Shambles lead to
its centre, the Great Minster. The new Jorvik museum is in Coppergate, the
Railway and Castle museums are well worth a visit.
Castle Howard, Sir John Vanbrugh's stately mansion and beautiful parklands are
only 17miles from Thornton-le-Dale. Pickering, a nearby market town is 2
miles away. The Church has 15th century murals thought to be the finest in
England. The Beck Isle Museum of Rural life stands by the river.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs from Pickering Station through the beautiful
steep wooded scenery of Newtondale and over the moors to Goathland and Grosmont. |
